Renegade Scrabble Tournament
Posted by Rodney Weis on Tue September 14, 2021 at 11h24Maureen Morris organized the Renegade Scrabble tournament, held on September 11-12, 2021, at the Beddington Theatre Arts Centre. Twenty players battled in two divisions, with fourteen players using TWL and six players using the CSW lexicon. Several players made the trip from out of town, including George, Jason K., Tanya, Hank and John L. from Saskatchewan, John A. from British Columbia, and Kirsten all the way from Utah! There was an abundance of door prizes, including tile sets and various other Scrabble-themed items. Special thanks go to those who also contributed to prize pool via cash donations (Debra Bates), and fund-raising (Noella Ward and Sue Brigliadori).
The TWL division was played as a 14-player round-robin, minus the final round which was contested in the king-of-the-hill format. Prizes were allocated to players in both the top half and bottom half of the draw, based on pre-tournament ranking. The top three finishers in the top section were Juraj Pivovarov (who was Gibsonized after a perfect 12-0 start and finished with a perfect record), Siri Tillekeratne, and Emil Rem. The second section saw Hank Hees (who finished above Emil in the crosstable) prevail, followed closely by Tanya Bunhai and Terri Morigeau.
The CSW division played a double round-robin, followed by three king-of-the-hill rounds. The division had two clear favourites by rating, and they separated themselves from the rest of the field. Nicholas Tam ended up victorious, after he and second-place finisher George Macaulay played five games against each other during the tournament, with Nick taking their series 4-1.
