Annual Donation of $100K USD to WGPO Announced

WGPO, the Word Game Players Organization, had some good news this week.
US$100,000 per year is being contributed to WGPO, most of it intended to increase the prize pool at their annual tourney called The Word Cup.

For about ten years WGPO has been a rival scrabble organization to the official one, NASPA (North American Scrabble Players Association). WGPO has been about a quarter as big.

However recent developments seem to have disgruntled some of the NASPA members so that the imbalance may level out or even make WGPO a larger organization than NASPA. Our own club left NASPA for WGPO this summer as we opposed the unilateral removal of the so-called "offensive words" against the wishes of their own membership and their Advisory Board.

To help this possibility, a scrabbler from Denver, Jon Shreve, has pledged that enormous contribution.
The next WGPO Word Cup is scheduled for Chicago, July 9-13. 31 games plus a 6 game Early Bird on July 8.

Membership has always been free, and there have never been participation fees charged at tournaments, both unlike NASPA.
