Spring Tournament 2025 has been rated

Kudos to newcomers and students Xander and Izzy who made the trek from Edmonton for our 1d tournament! It is very brave as it can be intimidating to make the foray into tournament scrabble. They did exceedingly well, managing the clock and time pressure like pros, and made many bingos, and even chalked up a few wins to boot!

I was sitting comfortably in round 1 with 183 to 76 against Isabelle. Then she hits me with the one-two punch:

• DELAYING (101)
• OPAQUE (59)

and suddenly had my undivided attention. I'm now losing 236-213!
Beautifully played! I did end up winning, but Izzy gets credit for giving me my closest game of the tournament. In fact, she had Siri on the ropes too, but a few challenges and an exchange slowed her down enough that he was able to catch up.

Siri, 80+, showed he's "Still Got It" and finished very strongly - 2nd place, picking up a $90 prize. Impressive!

Sue Brigliadori chalked up a win against Randall Thomas, so despite losing to running mate Terri in the final round, she won the U1200 1st place prize.

We are grateful to Wendy for donating her entry fee to the prize pool. With it, we offered a prize for top unrated player. Izzy had the better record most of the tournament, but Xander picked up wins in the final two rounds to overtake her.

Thank you to Randall and Terri for arriving at 8:00am, to help set up and make sure everything went smoothly.

Sue made an amazing dish of Butter Chicken, enough for everyone, and all of us were able to visit and get to know each other better over lunch. Thank you to everyone who brought snacks, including Doug Moe for the crackers, cold cuts and cheese!
