Western Canadian Scrabble Championship

Hi all, finally life is slowly coming back to normal, after preparing
for and helping run (not to mention playing in and hosting five
out-of-towners) the biggest Scrabble event in Canada - about 100
players from all over the continent playing up to 37 rounds of Scrabble
over five gruelling days. We gave away about $8,000 in cash prizes, 100%
of the entry fees in the Main Event, and about 84% in each of the two
Early Birds. Perhaps the funnest part of the event was the Chinese
buffet for all the players and out-of-town guests paid for by the
Calgary Scrabble Club funds.

My sincere thanks to all the fellow Directors Wayne Clifford, Randall
Thomas, Betty Bergeron and Jesse Matthews for their hard work to make
the event a resounding success for the 14th consecutive year. Our
long-time club veteran Ross Stevenson made a major financial
contribution (for the fourth time, no less) to make the event possible.
We had a special award in each Division in Ross's honour - for making
the four highest totalling bingos starting with the letters R-O-S-S.
There was intense competition.in each Division.

Thanks are also due to Albert Hahn (the official chauffeur for airport
and other rides), Juraj Pivovarov (our Internet expert) and Terri Chute
(who did the computer data entry flawlessly). Many thanks also to
numerous club members who welcomed fellow Scrabblers (some of them total
strangers) to their homes so that they could afford to make the
pilgrimage to Calgary in these tough economic times and indulge in their
favourite passion. We couldn't have done it without you. And my sincere
apologies if I missed anyone - there were so many of you who helped
immensely.

But most of all, many thanks to all of you who came once again to
Calgary to enjoy our hospitality and camaraderie and five days of great
Scrabble. We're already planning next year's event, and hope to see you
all again, with a friend (or more) in tow.

Sincerely,

Siri Tillekeratne
