WGPO Word Deletions Vote - join by Nov 25th

Posted by Wayne on Tue November 24, 2020 at 6h40

To all Calgary Scrabble Club members: I hope everyone is healthy and staying safe. Although the time when we will be able to gather together again is unknown, there are some important decisions to be taken coming up in the near future.

Over the summer months a decision was made by the NASPA executive board to remove some number (in the hundreds) of “slurs” from the lexicon. The deletions are set to come into effect in early January 2021. This decision was made over the objections of the NASPA advisory board vote (including or own advisory board member Peter Sargious) which voted against it. Also NASPA’S own member survey showed that fully two thirds of the respondents were against any deletions to the lexicon. Despite these objections, NASPA has decided to forge ahead with the deletions.

The directors of the Calgary Scrabble Club are not in favour of censoring our dictionary. All have been or are now members of the WGPO scrabble group. WGPO is conducting a binding vote as to whether that organization will create its own lexicon without the deletion of the “slurs”; this vote to be taken in December. We are asking all of the Calgary Scrabble group members to consider joining WGPO. This process is free and takes only a couple of minutes to complete. Just google “WGPO”. There is a lot more information on the issue on the WGPO website. However you feel about the deletions, you will be able to vote for or against as a WGPO member.

Those wishing to join WGPO should sign up at http://wordgameplayers.org/join/ by November 25th to guarantee eligibility to vote.

Thank you for your time.

Wayne (on behalf of the directors).
